Darrell married his wife Deanne in the fall of 1980, and they resided in Lee's Summit, Missouri with their three children, Lindsey, Jeff, and Ryan.  Since retiring, Darrell had actively given his time to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, both as a spokesman for the "One Way to Play Drug Free" program, and serving on their local board of directors.  Darrell and his family attended First Baptist Church of Blue Springs, Missouri, and was involved in their sports ministry.  Darrell began providing color commentary to local high school basketball games in 1999 and play-by-play to local high school baseball games in 2000 for KCWJ's "Enjoy the Game - Game of the Week".
